A Prince Story, Part 1

Prince started recording his demo at Sound 80 Studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At age 18 Prince signed a contract with Warner Brothers Records in 1977. In October over a span of three months, the basic tracks were recorded at the Record Plant in Sausalito, California. He settled in an apartment in Mill Valley, California. Prince worked obsessively on the project, singing all vocals and playing all instruments. These basic tracks were completed in late December in 1977. To complete the recording process for overdubs and final mixing, the project was moved in January 1978 to Sound Labs Studio in Hollywood, California. Prince completed the final mixes on February 28, 1978. The total cost of the making of Prince’s first album For You was at a cost of $170,500.00 which is a staggering $708,358.00 in 2021 dollars, three times the original budget. Soft and Wet was the very first release of Prince which became a top 20 hit on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs Chart reaching #12.
